AB Carl E Ekman was founded in Klintehamn 1858.
The founder, Lars Petter Ekman was the great-great grandfather of the present CEO, Lars Ekman, who has been in charge since 1972.
The company has been a corporation in Visby since 1945.

In 1858 consul Lars Petter Ekman (1809-1869) was appointed for shipping clearance by the magistrate of Visby. He was "businessman and townsman" in the city since 1847, and Hanover consul since 1851. After his death 1869 the elder son Carl Laurentius Ekman (1836-1901) was appointed to shipbroker. He was also the German consul on Gotland, businessman and owner of the Fire & life insurance company Svea agency on Gotland.

C.L Ekmans elder son Carl Emil Ekman took over the shipping agency and in 1890 he was appointed shipping clearance agent in Visby by the authorities. He was a very important business person on Gotland. Carl Emil started many today well known companies. He was also the German consul as well as a bank- and townsman.

In 1972, Carl Emil Ekman's son, Carl Eric Ekman (1919-1987) passed the company to his son, Lars Ekman, who is the present CEO.
